United is handing out elite status right now, and the clock is short. Through its Better WiFi promotion, the airline will match American or Delta elites to a comparable United Premier tier, free to request, as long as you ask by October 22. We are an American shop at heart, but the mission here has always been elite status for cheap, and a free match is about as cheap as status gets. If some of your flying already lands you on United, this one is worth a look before the window closes.

What the offer actually is

United is going after Delta and American flyers with the pitch that its Starlink WiFi is faster, and the carrot is status. If you hold elite status with American AAdvantage or Delta SkyMiles, you submit proof and United matches you to the Premier level that lines up with your current tier. Approved members get that Premier status for an initial window so they can try it on real flights. The request has to be in by October 22, so this is a this-week decision, not a someday one.

The catch: free to start, earned to keep

The match itself costs nothing, but holding onto it is not automatic. To keep the matched Premier status through January 31, 2028, you have to spend and fly on United during the challenge window, and the requirement climbs as the tier rises. Miss it and the status quietly lapses when the trial period ends. Check United's own terms for the exact flying and spending numbers at each level before you count on keeping it, because that is the part people skip and regret.

When it is worth grabbing

Here is the honest filter. If you never set foot on a United plane, skip this and move on. If even a slice of your travel forces you onto United, a route only they fly or a work trip you cannot reroute, then a free Premier match is a real gift for that flying. The upgrades, the free bags, the better boarding, all of it applies to trips you were taking anyway. You are not changing your life to chase it. You are collecting perks on flights already on your calendar.

The initial window alone can pay for itself on a busy stretch of United travel, even if you never complete the challenge to extend it. Treat the extension as a bonus you reach for only if the United flying is already there.

Where this fits the cheap-status game

A status match is the fastest on-ramp to elite perks because it skips the earning entirely. That is the appeal and the whole reason we are flagging it. One limit is worth stating plainly so nobody builds a bad plan on it. A matched status does not chain into another airline's match. United's terms exclude promotional and matched status from qualifying, and American's own status match wants status you earned, so you cannot launder a United match into American or the other way around. Treat this as a United play that stands on its own.

For status you actually build and keep, the cheap engine has not changed. On the American side that is loyalty-point stays through AAdvantage Hotels, which is the beat we live on the rest of the year. A free match is a nice head start when the flying lines up. The stays are what carry you to a tier and hold it.

How to request it

The offer lives on United's own MileagePlus promotion page at promo.united.com/offers/statusmatchbetterwifi. You submit your American or Delta status there. Approvals are not instant and can take a couple of weeks, so getting the request in well before the October 22 cutoff is smarter than filing it on the last day.

Elite for Cheap — earn status for less.
